The stars would not be in the heavens
if we were meant to walk in darkness.
The retrogrades of Juno and the Centaur Chariklo (pronounced Kha'riklo) synthesize in 2017, with their first conjunction occurring on the New Moon of March 28, 2017. Juno and Chariklo create an interesting pairing. The asteroid Juno is about relationships of all types, the types of relations we want, the covenants we have in our relationships, and the nature of how we interrelate. Chariklo is the largest of Centaurs, named after the goddess-nymph Chariklo from Mount Pelion in Greece, Chiron's wife. Chiron and Chariklo have a rather special relationship and thus one interesting to explore in a natal chart.
Although Juno-Chariklo conjunctions and cycles occur every several years, this one is exceptionally unique and extra-significant for a few reasons. The Juno-Chariklo conjunctions rarely occur during Juno's retrograde. This means that a new Earth-Juno cycle and a new Earth-Chariklo cycle engage during their retrogrades. The Earth-Juno synod occurs on July 2 and the Earth-Chariklo synod occurs on July 3, thus the retrograde loops are in perfect alignment. Juno and Chariklo also initiate a new 4.7-year synodic cycle at the same time (on July 3), which continues through March 17, 2022. This produces the synchronous cycles, meaning that the Earth-Juno cycle, the Earth-Chariklo cycle and the Juno-Chariklo cycle start at the same time.
The next time Juno and Chariklo conjoin while retrograde does not occur until 2054, but this does not occur with Earth as it does now. This means that there is not an alignment of the Sun, Earth, Juno and Chariklo as there is now. Thus, the Earth-Juno, the Earth-Chariklo and the Juno-Chariklo cycles do not coincide as they do now.
Juno is the asteroid of covenant relationships and soul colleagues. Juno is not only of personal relations and covenants made in them, but also those of a business and economic nature to those of political leaders and nations of the world. In the astrological chart, Juno indicates the nature of the issues and opportunities in significant relations of all sorts. Mature Juno is diplomatic, tactful, cooperative, and mutually trusting. Mature Juno expresses with a sense of equality within self that provides the ability to draw true partners and those of equality into one's life. There is an acceptance of another's truth or opinion without need to challenge or debate. There is an ability to honor and support others in their own choices and decisions. Mature Juno expresses in mutual support and unconditional love to allow each other to grow and change through whatever issues surface.
At a personal level, Juno's placement in the astrological chart is one of several points that determine the types of significant relations drawn into our lives and the nature of issues we may face in those relations. Juno's placement specifically reveals the nature of the compatibility we seek, that is, what is important to us regarding our partners. More about Juno.
Chariklo is the largest known Centaur object orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, with an orbital period of about 63 years. Chariklo embodies an open, warm-hearted, caring and nurturing demeanor, a persona often showing up unexpectedly in unique ways and in out of the ordinary situations, in seemingly magical meant-to-be encounters. Her presence is soft and uniquely attractive, with an optimistic, well-balanced, stable and ambassador-like quality. She has an inherent impetus to nurture and protect the sanctity of others and those being reared in the care of others. She does not get entrapped in judgmental thought or concept, nor is she a radical extremist, but has impartial understanding. She imparts a unique perceptual capacity, able to see things from an oblique perspective.
Chariklo often expresses herself in sacred places of power or in places that are private and secluded, such as hermitages or retreats. She may also express into areas involving esoteric art-science, or even addressing dominating factions with covert manipulative controlling intent. Here she acts in a shamanistic capacity. She may apply her nurturing ambassador-like quality with strategic motive for a specific purpose, especially to protect the sanctity of one's personal space and that of others and their choices to live outside the societal norm, as well as sacred places of specific purpose and places of privacy for spiritual healing.
Chariklo's influence on Earth is like that of a spiritual mother from which spiritual nourishment and guiding wisdom expresses. She imparts a protective and nurturing quality toward those she cares for, for family and covenant relations, especially for those who are unique, progressive and radical, who may not fit into the status quo, ensuring their capacity to access and claim their fulfillment. Chariklo inspires us to become pure vessels for the expression of our greatest potential. She inspires us to attune to and live from our greater unique soul essence and truth though demonstrable action with consideration for the long-term transcendent nature of the durative soul.
With neutrality and truthfulness, Chariklo holds an energetic resonance for others to ensure their personal healing, awakening and evolutionary fulfillment. This is significant to consider for Chariklo's placement in a natal chart. More about Chariklo.
Another reason the Juno-Chariklo synthesis is significant is because it occurs amongst the stars of Sagittarius, the Centaurian Zen Archer. Here the emphasis is about the higher vision and ideals the Zen Archer lives for, and the pursuit for a greater unified awareness. Chariklo is certainly at home and empowered in such an energetic.
Juno also has a prominent placement at the time of Chariklo's discovery, also discussed in the Chariklo section of the Centaurs. This Juno retrograde transits many people's natal Chariklo, for those born around 1953 through 1955, and Juno and Chariklo both transit natal Chariklo for some people, with the Chariklo return occuring around the age of 63.
Juno's retrogrades provide times to redefine the nature our relationships and how we interrelate, and in this case to refine and elevate the resonance of our relationships.
Due to Juno's retrograde, there are three geocentric Juno-Chariklo conjunctions, with the first occurring just two hours after the New Moon of March 28, as Juno is still direct, and slightly after Chariklo's retrograde (which occurs on April 17). The second conjunction occurs on July 3 during their retrogrades and at the time of the compounded Earth-Juno-Chariklo synod. The third occurs on October 13 with Juno once again direct and just after Chariklo returns direct (which occurs on Sept 17). Juno begins her retrograde on May 9, conjoining Pluto, and completes it on August 26. Juno enters her shadow (yellow band in the star chart) on February 12 and leaves it on November 15, just after she conjoins Pluto. Thus, the entire energetic as active for most of 2017, a significant and interesting one for relationships of all types.
Juno lies north of Sagittarius, making its retrograde loop around Scutum, the Galactic Shield of Earth's Precessional Cross. Juno begins her retrograde conjoining Sheliak of Lyra and completes it conjoining the bow of the Zen Archer. Chariklo, a bit south of the ecliptic, lies amongst the stars of the Zen Archer and over those of Corona Australis. The first Juno-Chariklo conjunction lies under the auspices of Vega of Lyra and conjoins Ascella (along with Nunki, Albaldah, Omi and Xi) of Sagittarius, and Meridiana of Corona Australis. The second and third conjunctions occur a few degrees earlier, but all in this few degree area of the zodiak.
The stars of Lyra lie in the northern heavens over late sidereal Sagittarius. Lyra contributes significantly to formulate the lofty ideals the Zen Archer pursues. Lyra is the Lyre of Hermes, originally bestowed with the qualities to invoke and communicate the messages of the gods. As the harp of the angelic messengers, the Lyre's tuning and voice not only impart beauty, beneficence, eloquence, and sensibility to the Zen Archer, but specifically translate divine information into vibration that supports transmutational healing and the spiritual awakening of consciousness. The stars of Lyra embody various facets of the artsciences of harmonics in light, sound, color and geometry, particularly the wisdom of those artsciences. More about the Lyre.
Vega, the harp star, is a zero magnitude star, the fifth brightest in the heavens, and one of the closer stars to our own. Vega is the principal star of Lyra and oversees this area of the heavens. Vega embodies the essence of angelic lyre, the spiritual and visionary art of the angels, or angles—meaning the harmonics of light, sound, and geometry applied in sacred proportion through which Divine Intelligence communicates. Fortuitous Vega inspires a multiplicity of possibilities for fulfillment, especially related to paths pursued in the art-sciences applied for healing and personal evolution.
Alignments with the stars of Lyra inspire multi-dimensional vision, artistic creativity, and involvement with the artsciences applied through multi-media, the healing arts and higher education, especially supporting the expansion of consciousness.
Sagittarius, stargate to Galactic Center, is commonly referred to as the Sagittarian Centaur, Zen Archer, or the First Horseman whose arrow points toward Galactic Center, the heart of our Galaxy, from which expresses the cosmic intelligent force that forms and suspends our entire Galaxy. Sagittarius oversees the "Gate of God" (5° sidereal Sag)—the primary reference point for the cycle of Earth's ~25,000-year Precessional Cross, created by the intersection of the plane of our galaxy and the plane of our solar system. Earth's Precessional Cycle, and the cycle of the Precessional Cross occurring in the ecliptic ring, governs the evolutionary cycle of the soul collective incarnate on Earth.
As defender of the Galactic City of Light, the Sagittarian Centaur is responsible for the higher spiritual education of all intelligent life on Earth. Overhead is the constellation Scutum, Galactic shield of Earth's Precessional Cross, which is emblazoned with its symbol, the cross in a circle, which is both the astronomical symbol for Earth and Earth's Precessional Cross. Sagittarius is supreme defender of the High Truth of the Precessional Cross—ensuring the spiritual and evolutionary fulfillment of humankind—one who is willing to live, fight, and die for this Truth.
Sagittarius is the spiritual warrior. On a personal level, the stars of Sagittarius generally inspire demonstrable action to live a deeper inner truth, or a more universal truth, and to express that truth through an undaunted Zen focus to hit the target of our highest ideals and dreams, ultimately to achieve a greater unified awareness. The Zen Archer is focused upon long-term goals, that is, the goals of durative soul rather than short-term trivial or transitory pursuits. This long-term vision is also articulated by Telescopium, which lies south of Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a seeker, always on a quest for knowledge that transcends or that lays beyond the transient and superficial world of human affairs. The Sagittarian Archer is generally self-taught, of spiritual wisdom amalgamated over time through raw experience. Sagittarius is the sanguine inspirationalist, and is of lofty vision and higher ideals.
Ascella (Zeta Sag), the third brightest star in Sagittarius, is a binary star system, with its two stars orbiting each other in a 21.075-year period. Although, traditionally meaning the armpit, or more succinctly, the junction of the archer's shoulder and the outstretched arm holding the bow, along which the archer takes aim, Ascella lies more so at the breast or heart of the Centaur, slightly south of Nunki. The two stars are about one degree in ecliptical longitude, thus tightly conjoined. Ascella embodies the Archer's power of intent, the truth within from which he lives. Ascella imparts a warrior type quality, imparting speed, agility and an extra-perceptual awareness.
Brilliant bluish Nunki (Sigma Sag), the second brightest star in Sagittarius, is one of the hotter bright stars, and radiates much of its light in the invisible ultraviolet. Visually, it shines with 630 times the Sun's luminosity, but when we take the ultraviolet into account, the star's luminosity is actually 3300 suns. Nunki rotates with a speed of over 200 km/sec, 100 times that of our Sun. (Jim Kaler, Professor Emeritus of Astronomy, University of Illinois)
Nunki marks the fletching of the Zen Archer's arrow. The fletching of an arrow is what causes it to spin and have stability in flight, making it possible for the arrow to accurately move through space to hit its target. Nunki teaches us to steer our intent with undaunted focus, which is the guiding and stabilizing force used to achieve our goals. Nunki imparts eloquent fluidity of form in movement and a sense of being in the flow, and impels the expression of one's full potential.
Ascella, Nunki and surrounding stars are where the pure intent and vision of the Zen Archer is transferred into the power and focus that drives and steers the archer's arrow. This is a place of applied power in sidereal Sagittarius. It articulates the combined qualities of vision and high ideals with the inherent force of intent applied with undaunted focus to achieve our goals. There must be movement / velocity for the fletching of an arrow (Nunki) to steer the arrow's course. Thus we must not only access our intent of purpose, but we must move it, apply it with focused deliberation through conscious action from a place of stability and confidence to transform our intent of purpose into the manifestation of our greater ideals and visions.

Several star qualities amalgamate around the Zen Archer's hand holding the taunt arrow: Nunki (Sigma), Phi, Ascella (Zeta), Tau, Nu, and Xi of Sagittarius. This is the warrior's core energy in its full potential, drawn and ready to release, provoking action that is life supportive—hence why Sag is the spiritual warrior. This location marks the central core essence of the Archer, a point of equipoise and balance. It impels us to align all of the light fibers of our being into a coherent whole and focus that totality in controlled action. These stars impart a capacity for intense, highly-intuitive, mental focus, which is calculative and precise, able to cut to the truth.
Vega, along with Ascella and the adjoining stars of the archer, impel us to bring forth a new ideal of awareness of self as the creative force in the world. They inspire us to make choices from and to intentionally create from this higher realm of self that is already full and radiantly expressive to bring about change in our lives, rather than from a place of lack, from what we are not or do not have. Creating from the fullness of higher self, from soul-level awareness, is to create that which is for our highest good and the expression of our greatest potential.
Corona Australis is a semi-circle of stars just under the Zen Archer. Considered an auspicious constellation, had been in existence since time immemorial. It is associated with the "Laurel Crown," a sign of victory, as worn by the Greek god Apollo—and hence the name Laureate. "It has also been referred to as the Crown of Sagittarius (Corona Sagittarii), originating from the outspreading sun's rays in crown like form shown around the Gandharvas, the Aryan celestial horses that are suggested to be the forerunners to the Centaurs." (Richard Hinckley Allen). The Gandharvas were all male and the mates of the all female Apsaras, both of a pure unadulterated nature. The Apsaras were akin to beautiful water or forest nymphs, and the Gandharvas were ethereal beings of the air, forests, and mountains known for their musical and mystical skills with the forces of nature. The Gandharvas were also stewards of Soma, the golden nectar or ambrosia of the gods. Thoth / Hermes is also associated with conjoining Lyra, Harp of the Angels, which embodies the healing artsciences of light, sound and geometry.

Corona Australis embodies the wisdom of alchemy—of using natural forces to manifest a higher order or achieve a higher purpose, ideal or goal. This is an alchemical process; one initiated by evocation. A caduceus in physics uses two polarities or energetic fields in such a way that they cancel each other (how a caduceus coil is wound), which in essence opens a zero-point portal in space and time. This is the wisdom of the Centaurian Archer who establishes the caduceus within—the balanced cancellation of polarity within self, which activates the entwined spiritual currents (kundalini) up the spine, which in turn illuminates the pineal in the brain. This opens the perfect path in space through which the archer's arrow hits its target of unified consciousness (galactic awareness).
The last Juno-Chariklo cycle began on August 11, 2012 in sidereal Scorpio. Juno was north of the ecliptic in Ophiuchus and Chariklo was south of the Scorpion's body. Both Conjoined Antares and Al Niyat of Scorpio. Curiously this was very near the same location as the Chiron-Chariklo synod of 1949 (presented below). This cycle, in mid-Sagittarius, begins on July 3, 2017 and continues through March 17 2022. The 2022 cycle begins in early sidereal Capricorn, just after Chariklo crosses its North Node. That synod conjoins Algedi, head of the Goat, Theta Aquila, Alpha Microscopium and Theta Indus.
As mentioned above, the cycle occurring now is rather unique compared to the other cycles due to the Earth-Juno-Chariklo alignment occurring during Juno's retrograde, which means that in addition to the start of a new 4.7-year Juno-Chariklo cycle, a new 503-day Earth-Juno cycle and a new annual Earth-Chariklo cycle also begin. Thus, this specific Juno-Chariklo cycle is immediately grounded into our palpable experience through the expression of the Earth-Juno and Earth-Chariklo cycles.
We should begin to gain more insight into the nature of the Juno-Chariklo synthesis and into the astrological nature of Chariklo staring with the March 28, 2017 lunar cycle. Continuing to observe relationships and the nature of interpersonal relating throughout the Juno-Chariklo retrogrades, and throughout the remainder of 2017, may reveal much more.
I should point out that there are two nymphs with the name Chariklo. One is the goddess-nymph from Mount Pelion, daughter of Apollo, who is Chiron's wife, and whom the asteroid is named after. The other is a nymph of Thebes in Boeotia, the wife of the Spartan, Everes, and who was a close friend of the goddess Athena. These are often confused, with the mythology of the nymph of Thebes mistakenly being applied to the asteroid, and because the history of the nymph from Mount Pelion is more obscure.
Exactly how the Juno-Chariklo retrogrades, and new cycle to emerge, will play out is somewhat speculative on my part. I base the following upon Chariklo's orbital parameters, her discovery chart, the commonality of lineage between the goddess-nymph Chariklo with Chiron's mother, Philyre (Philyra), and through my own astrological observation.
The Juno-Chariklo synthesis may bring emphasis to the resonance we hold in our relations, including all types of relations, those intimate and personal to those of business and politics. This can impel a shift of attention from "I" verses "other," to the waveform between, from segregating and defining discrete entities and their opposing differences to the greater purpose they serve together and what they can create together. This certainly would be a welcomed change for international relations.
It may impel us to establish a spatial resonance that is caring, nourishing and protective, a space that ensures the sanctity of relationships, and to establish or refine our relationships and how we interrelate in ways that honor the sovereignty of both parties. It may impel the dissolution of relationships that are not respectful of individual sovereignty, those that are not serving personal healing and mutual growth and wellbeing. It may impel the formation of new relationships, perhaps through mysterious, unexpected or seemingly magical or meant to be encounters.
This synthesis may impel new creative expressions in relationships that serve to elevate, heal and awaken human consciousness to a more unified awareness (Lyra-Sagittarius). This may extend into the creation of vibrationally attuned environments and multi-media artistry. It brings emphasis to higher ideals and longer-term goals. More importantly, it impels us to hold a non-judgemental resonance of unconditional acceptance in our relations that can allow a deep cathartic healing to occur in our relations, and in how we interrelate, so we can realize and manifest a greater unified conscious awareness.
To learn more about Chariklo, her orbital parameters, her discovery chart and Juno, her relationship with Chiron, and her commonality with Pholus, see the Chariklo section of the Centaurs.
A full star chart is presented in the Chariklo section on the Centaur's web page.
The Juno-Chariklo cycles nest within the much longer Chiron-Chariklo, which began in 1949, which can add additional context to the Juno-Chariklo synthesis.
Chiron and Chariklo conjoined throughout 1949 during their retrogrades (shown as the dotted white lines in the star chart), conjoining the stars forming the right leg of Ophiuchus, Al Niyat (σ and τ) and Antares of Scorpio. Their synod occurred on May 23, 1949 15:42 UT, initiating the current synodic cycle. The Chiron-Chariklo cycles are rather long, with this being about 257 years. We are currently in the first quarter of this cycle. We will reach the 90° point in 2042. Entries specifically setting the theme of this cycle include Al Niyat (σ), and two high energy X-ray sources, Scorpio X-1, and Hercules X-1.
The stellar energetic here impels a high-energy passionate expression. It impels a transmutational process and the opportunity to physically and emotionally demonstrate our choice to walk the higher path of self-mastery and self-responsibility. It impels us to embody this capacity in our neurology such that this action becomes unquestionably natural. It impels us to create the space or resonance in our lives for this inner metamorphosis and to demonstrate this transmutation in our relations and in how we participate in the world. Without embracing this inner metamorphic shift, we will continue experience a greater sense of unrest and agitation if motive to act is based from personality interest alone. It impels an emotional maturing, to embrace the emotions we experience as our own doing rather than blaming how we feel outside of self and upon others in anarchic rebelliousness—a prerequisite to self-mastery—and to establishing a healthy neurological flow in self and in the collective populous.
Ultimately, if we pursue a level of personal metamorphosis and self-mastery beyond the common person, we experience an inversion of our perception of the world. This inversion is from seeing self as being entrapped and suppressed by forces that seem to be outside of self, bound by our 3-d realmspace, to establishing the capacity within self to express outwardly through the will of intent so as to direct those forces creating our lives—from the inside out—to consciously steer our creative power to manifest a new reality for ourselves. This inner metamorphosis is not something done from how we think. It is about spatial dimensionality, allowing a perceptual awakening within self, such that we totally shed our limiting and previous human mold.
Synodic Cycles are created when two (or more) planets align in their orbits around the Sun. The synodic cycle theme, defined by the planets involved and the star alignments at the time, will unfold until the two planets align again, marking the completion of the synodic cycle and the beginning of the next one.
There are many synodic cycles with unique astrological themes occurring simultaneously, creating a harmonic symphony of creative unfoldment in consciousness. Synodic cycles can be thought of as longer-term underlying currents, much like the backdrop chorus of a symphony, providing the underlying astrological context guiding our evolution.
