Bright Green Comet Easy to See This Week

A bright green comet is streaking across early morning skies this week, experts say.
Comet McNaught C/2009 R1 has been steadily gaining brightness and will be most brilliant through June 16, during its closest approach to Earth at about 105 million miles (170 million kilometers) away.

In early June 2010, C/2009 R1 was visible with binoculars,and by June 8 it was visible to the unaided eye in a dark sky with little light pollution. It is expected to grow brighter and become widely visible to the unaided eye by mid- or late-June, at which time it will appear between the constellations Auriga and Gemini.

Comet McNaught visible in northeast sky just before dawn

In June 2010, Comet McNaught is found in the northeast sky shortly before dawn. But to see it, you have to be willing to get up dreadfully early to catch this binocular comet in the June predawn darkness.
