EXCERPT:Comet Elenin has an orbital period longer than 200 years (termed a long-period comet). It is an ordinary comet, estimated to have a solid icy core about 3 or 4 kilometers in diameter.
Comet Elenin will reach its perihelion (closest point to the Sun) on September 10, 2011. It will reach its perigee (closest point to Earth) on October 16, 2011, at which time it will be about 34 million kilometers from Earth, which is about 100 times further than our Moon.
