Pink Moon: April's Full Moon Explained

The Pink Moon is the full moon traditionally associated with April. In 2027, it reaches its full phase on April 20. Despite the name, it won’t actually turn pink—the name comes from a spring wildflower.

This year’s Pink Moon also arrives shortly before the Lyrid meteor shower reaches its peak. The two events sound like a good pairing, but bright moonlight will make the fainter meteors harder to see.

When is the Pink Moon?

The Pink Moon is April’s full moon. In 2027, the Moon will reach its full phase on April 20 at 6:27 p.m. EDT, or 3:27 p.m. PDT. Check the fact sheet above for the exact time in your location.

The full phase occurs during daylight across much of North America, but the Moon will still look full when it rises that evening. It will also appear nearly full on the nights before and after April 20.

Why is it called the Pink Moon?

The name is usually linked to moss pink, a low-growing wildflower also known as creeping phlox. Its scientific name is Phlox subulata, and its pink, purple, and white flowers begin appearing across parts of eastern North America in spring. NASA’s Night Sky Network explains the connection between April’s full moon and the early bloom of moss phlox.

The plant spreads close to the ground, often creating broad patches of color over rocky slopes and garden borders. The Moon itself doesn’t change color because the flowers are blooming; Pink Moon is simply a seasonal name.

Will the Pink Moon look pink?

Usually, no. Like any full moon, it may appear yellow, orange, or reddish while it’s close to the horizon. At that angle, moonlight travels through more of Earth’s atmosphere, which scatters more of the shorter blue wavelengths. Once the Moon climbs higher, it generally looks pale white or gray.

Other names for April’s Moon

Different spring calendars emphasize different signs of the season. The Mashantucket Pequot Museum records April as the Fishing Moon, a period connected with the return of herring and preparations for planting.

Frog Moon and Breaking Ice Moon also appear in April moon lists, reflecting the return of frog calls and the thawing of lakes and streams.

The 2027 Pink Moon and the Lyrid meteor shower

The annual Lyrid meteor shower peaks overnight on April 22–23, only two nights after the Pink Moon. The Lyrids can produce fast, bright meteors, but most are easier to see under a dark sky.

In 2027, the bright waning Moon will remain in the sky for much of the night and wash out many of the fainter streaks. You may still catch a few brighter meteors from a dark location, especially if you keep the Moon behind you, but this won’t be an ideal year for the shower.
